[ the support group seems... nice. she thinks? everyone there seems nice. comforting. there's a general sense of camaraderie, a we're all in this together that's clear even from the moment they speak. a bunch of girls, some in bad situations and some in wonderful ones, all with a mutual understanding: right now, us mothers need to stand up for one another.
she's not surprised people are giving her a wide berth. for one, she's not really showing too much yet. for another... well. she was a boy, while she had an owner. probably still is, as far as most people are concerned. with her short hair and her slacks and her button-ups, will she even look like a mom in a few months? will people just assume she's got a beer belly?
her shoulders, her ears droop down. this was a mistake. she shouldn't have come after all. ]
[ Ai doesn't really know what to expect from the support group. Groups in general, she doesn't really handle very well - she never quite clicks in and she usually ends up hovering on the edges, if she's even permitted to be part of it in the first place. She doesn't know if the enforced proximity and camaraderie will help or hurt in that regard but she's doing her best to be cautious, just in case.
She's aware that, tiny and cute and just starting to show as she is, she's got a pretty good image going as she is, so she leans into it. She picks out an outfit that's pretty but not unapproachable, puts on a smile that does the same, pours out all her sincerely nervous delight and excitement and answers questions about her situation very, very carefully. Yes, they're her first litter. Yes, she couldn't be happier. Yes, they have a wonderful papa waiting back home. Anything more specific, she dodges and redirects so smoothly that nobody seems to even catch that she's doing it.
So, things are going pretty well. Ai can't relax all the way just yet, but she thinks she's made a pretty good first impression... not that the same can be said of all the other girls. Her gaze keeps going to the quiet one who's said pretty much nothing since she first got here and Ai can't quite figure out why. They're not the only rabbits so it's not that... but eventually, the nagging feeling resolves into something she understands.
Recognition. This girl's a bit like her, huh? Maybe not the Ai she is right now, pretty and pampered and loved, but the one who was scuffed in the streets and dragged off to get dressed up like a luxury pet. Chances are good nobody's going to bother doing that for this girl.
So Ai waits until the group's all mingling among themselves, distracted enough by chatter and icebreaking that nobody really pays any attention when she comes sidling up, ears perked in a friendly sort of way and doing her very best to not look like a threat. ]
Wow, I was really worried I'd be the only bunny but looks like there's a couple of us, huh? [ Lie. If it'd even entered her mind as a consideration, she wouldn't have worried about it. ] Are you a first timer too?
[ she watches the rest of the group, picks up a few things here and there - who's further along, who's newly expecting, a stray name or two. but by and large, those pass, and she's left to daydream once again. would anyone notice her here? if she went back to her old home, thumped on the door until one of the boys opened up, would they try to step up? it wouldn't be... good, but would it be better?
she barely even notices ai until she's a few feet away. she startles a bit - but only a bit, responding as quickly as she can. ]
Oh! I'm, uh- Actually, I'm- [ an awkward cough. her voice drops as she speaks, forces itself into a lower register. finally, she offers a polite sort of smile - one a lot less trained than ai's. ] Haha. Is it that obvious?
[ She's kind of stiff, huh... not that Ai can blame her. So she does her best to warm up her smile a little more. ]
Heehee. Call it a lucky guess. Or maybe more like wishful thinking? I was kind of worried I was gonna be the only mom here who hasn't done this before.
[ That's true at least - her social anxiety brain had been very helpfully conjuring up all sorts of scenarios where she was the only first time mom and everyone else was on their fifth or so litters and every single worry and question she had was going to be hopelessly juvenile in comparison.
You know. Helpfully. Like she wasn't nervous enough already. ]
Everyone's been super nice, don't get me wrong! It's nice feeling like we're all looking out for each other. But... hmm, I guess knowing somebody else is figuring things out for the first time makes me feel a little better.
Oh, yeah. I get you. It's like, I didn't really have any idea what to do about any of this? And then I got here, and it's like I didn't even know the right questions to ask. Like I'm making a mistake by not even knowing that much.
[ the other bunny's smile is- infectious. beautiful. there's a certain something in that smile, where it doesn't matter how much thought went into what the smile should look like because the goal was to reassure both of them. "new moms should stick together." how nice is that? ]
[ there. she managed to say something without sounding like an idiot. it's fine. they're doing fine.
so why do her cheeks feel wet and blotchy? why is her breath starting to get shaky? ]
Oh. Oh, jeez, I'm. I'm sorry, I didn't think.
[ and that's about all she manages to get out before she has to bury her face in her hands, muffling the sobs that she didn't manage to stop in time. ]
Oh, that isn't how that was supposed to go at all. ]
Oh - jeez, um, I didn't mean to- [ She parroting the other girl's fluster right back at her like a dummy. Not helpful, Ai! ] H-here, I'm sure I've got...
[ It takes her a few seconds of patting herself down to even remember that her dress has pockets, let alone where they are but once she dips her hand into one she manages to produce her hankie (clean, promise!) and offers it, with her free hand tentatively squeezing the other bunny's shoulder. ]
Sorry! I'm sorry. I'm really- I swear, I don't usually cry, I just. [ bottle it up and pretend nothing's wrong because at least that way she doesn't end up snapping at someone. you know. ] No, you don't need to do that, I- I don't want to get your stuff dirty...
[ she wipes at her eyes with the butt of her hand, trying to calm herself until she finally lets enough of it out. it's not like she looks good a full minute later, all blotchy and red, but at least she can talk without stammering. ]
Sorry. It's like... It wasn't real until you said it? And now it is. And that's scary, and I should hate that, but- but I don't, because it's still better than going back, and. I'm rambling again. I'm sorry.
[ with those wide blue eyes still trembling, she looks ai dead in the eye and says in an almost manically polite tone: ]
I'm Ken- Kinsei. Kinsei like the planet. Um. What's your name, ma'am?
It's okay...! Seriously, that's what it's for, right? [ She presses the hankie a little insistently into the other girl's hand. ] Go ahead and use it.
[ Is it mean if she's a little relieved? She doesn't want anyone to be crying, exactly, but seeing that she's not the only one overwhelmed and not sure what to make of things... it makes her feel a little better, at least. ]
You can just call me Ai. Don't worry about formalities and stuff. We're all supposed to be looking out for each other, right?
[ As if to prove that, Ai turns the wattage on her smile up a little more. ]
[ There is the sound of playful giggling as a little blonde girl with ribbons in her braids goes running by, hair streaming behind her as she shrieks her joy. ]
Elise, darling, be kind to your Papa! I said it's time to- ah!
[ Sylvain goes chasing after her, looking harried, his shirt partly unbuttoned and his tie hanging loose, his hair a bit mussed and his briefcase clapping against his back by the strap. Elise, the six year old terror, takes a rapid turn into a play tunnel and Sylvain trips at the last minute, falling onto his ass as her giggles go echoing through the plastic tube. ]
Catch me papa! Whee!!!
Princess, Papa needs to leave now. Please come out.
[ The Daycare staff assist Sylvain to his feet, offering consoling words as they take a turn trying to encourage the wayward child to stop playing. Elise, for her part, is crawling through the tunnels to try to find the friends she had made earlier in the day, who she thinks are sitting in the play submarine. ]
[ Sylvain turns to see the next parent coming in for pickup, a very pretty lady with long dark hair and dazzling eyes, and smiles, suddenly embarrassed at his display of ineffectual parenting. ]
The energy of the little ones, amiright?
