You're probably gonna have to if we wanna get home. I'm still kind of... not good. At this. I mean, I can do it! I've just never had to fight with, y'know, a partner before.

[ But she likes the sound of that word. Partner. It makes her sound a little bit less like a loser LARPing around in a fantasy world by herself. ]

Do you have any idea what your... powers are, I guess? Have you got a feel for them?

[ Ichijou looks at her hands. ]

I don't really know? I feel stronger than usual, but-- ah!

[ As a reaction to something or other, she starts glowing. ]

What's going on? I made myself glow somehow!

[daydreamy]

Ooohhh, glowing's usually a good start! I have no idea what you're gonna do but it's probably something cool!

[ I'm so sorry this is your tutorial buddy, Ichijou. ]

So, how does it feel? Do you feel stronger, like you're about to start flying...? Seriously, just feel out whatever seems natural and I'm sure it'll work out fine!

Okay, I don't know what I'm doing but I'm just gonna see what I can do...

[ She closes her eyes and concentrates. As she does a circle of light gradually expands on the ground around her - when it expands to include Kyouko, she can already feel any sort of mild fatigue or pain melting away. ]

I think it's doing something. Is it doing something?

[daydreamy]

[ Kyouko's been hooked up to IVs enough times that she knows what a painkiller feels like. But this is a little different -- it's not numbness exactly but suddenly, the twinge in her knee from this morning when she took a bad step on the stairs is gone and she feels like she's just took a shot of coffee right to the brain.

She blinks once, twice and then suddenly sharper and far more alert than she was before, she gives a huge grin. ]

Yeah! Yeah, it feels like -- man are you really sure you can't feel it? But it's like... I guess, healing! Or something like that? I'm not even a little tired anymore, that's amazing!

Oh. OH! [ HEALING POWERS. THAT'S WONDERFUL. ]

That's great! This way, even if I don't know the first thing about fighting, I can help you out!

[daydreamy]

Yesssss. Now I don't hafta worry about getting socked in the face by monsters!

[ no kyouko, you should definitely worry about that??? ]

You think there's anything else you can do?

I don't think there's really any way to know just based on feeling it out... but this should be enough for me to back you up in a real fight. I guess I can figure out the rest of my powers as I go.

[daydreamy]

Yeah! Oh, oh, maybe we can have like... a training session or something! There's still a ton of stuff I can barely do and you still gotta work out how different it feels moving around... seriously, did you see how fast I was moving before? The first few times I went running around this place, I totally wiped out all over the floor when I tried stopping. Seriously embarrassing.

A training session..? [That sounds kind of fun, actually.]

You mean, right now? Or is there something else we need to do while we're in here?

[daydreamy]

Yeah, right now! I don't think there's any monsters we've gotta worry about nearby but uh, we'll probably run into one on the way back. So I figure it's probably a good idea to get used to each other's powers and stuff before we get into a fight with one!

[shineinside]

Okay!

[Bow. She's bounced back hard since the start of the conversation.] I'll follow your lead, sensei!

[daydreamy]

[ That gets a peal of embarrassed laughter from her. ]

Nnnnooo, don't call me sensei, I'd be the worst sensei ever. The kind that writes the wrong kanji on the blackboard and forgets to grade your homework...

[ At least she's uh self aware ]

But, uh! Which part d'you wanna start on first? I've kinda got the hang of moving around so we could start there?

That sounds good! I just assumed that I could just start moving and it would come naturally, but it sounds like it's easy to overdo it if you aren't used to being that fast or strong. I wouldn't want to trip and fall while I'm supposed to be helping you fight.

[daydreamy]

You'd think so, right? Like, I had the hang of all the hitting and fighting pretty much right off the bat but maybe that's because I uh, didn't really have a choice... kind of like a fight or flight thing, you know?

[ helpless shrug. ]

But honestly, I'm not really used to moving fast in general without wanting to keel over after about five seconds? So maybe it'll be a little easier for you.

[ Kyouko shades her eyes with a hand and peers around for a moment, trying to find a good landmark. Then she points out a tree a little distance away from them with wide, low-hanging branches and dripping with sparkling flowers. ]

How about-- see how quick you can get over there and back to me! How's that?

[shineinside]

[ Ichijou pauses, that middle bit bouncing around her head. She looks back at Kyouko, not yet starting to run. ]

...I was so caught up in what being like this means for me, but this something you really wanted, too, isn't it? Having a body like that.

[daydreamy]

[ Kyouko smiles, but there's something a little wrong-footed about it too, like she's embarrassed. Or caught out, more like. ]

Haha, I guess? To be honest I was always... pretty sick and tired of being sick and tired. You know? Sometimes if I was having a bad day or I'd had to sit out of gym class again I just used to think... "man, what I wouldn't give to just get a little stronger!". Just a little, so I wasn't having to drag people down when I couldn't keep going.

And... whoever runs this place must've heard me. If there's anybody even listening out for that sort of thing, anyway.

[ When you put it that way, it really does sound like God, doesn't it? ]

...Okay. I'm gonna try running.

[ After a quick stretch, she's off. Unsteady at first from the unexpected power boost, but she doesn't fall over - she started slow rather than amping right up to top speed, and it saved her dignity. Likewise, she starts to slow well before reaching the tree, and still almost crashes into it. By the return trip, she's already getting a lot more steady.

Either way, it's pretty clear right away that her top speed isn't anything like Kyouko's. ]

Wow! You were really serious about this, it's hard getting my limbs to move like I'm used to.

[daydreamy]

[ Kyouko watches with keen interest, lightly bouncing up and down on her feet as she does so. She's never actually seen another Reflector move around before (she can't exactly observe herself) so it's a little hard to tell what's natural for Reflectors and what might be particular to Yuka.

When the other girl returns, Kyouko's got her chin cupped in her hand and she gives a considering little 'hmm' in response. ]

Yeah! It's weird, isn't it? It sorta reminds me of when your foot falls asleep and you've gotta just walk it off.

Is that as fast as you can go?

[shineinside]

I could probably go a little faster if I had some time to get used to it? I wasn't deliberately holding back or anything, though. It felt really fast.

[daydreamy]

That's... whoa. Okay.

[ And then suddenly Kyouko is all smiles. Even more so than she was before. ]

'cause... like, I'm not saying you're slow! That was still really fast, way faster than a normal person can run, right? But I guess... I guess maybe that means part of my powers is being even faster than that.

[shineinside]

I guess that makes sense. You wanted to be strong and fast, and I was just worried about being a girl, so we both got what we cared about the most.

Besides, if I can heal, it would be pretty unfair if I was also just as strong as you.

[daydreamy]

So we're like... a perfect team, then! If you can heal me up and I can make sure I do the heavy hitting then there's no way any monster's gonna stand up to us!

[ She grins, grabs Yuka's hands in both her own and, too overcome with excitement to keep still, bounces up and down on her heels again. ]

This is just... it's awesome! I never thought anyone else was gonna show up and then you just turned up out of the blue!

[shineinside]

[ She smiles as well, feeling a breathless energy. A chance to be her real self. A real friend, who accepts that self. A whole new chapter in her life. It's almost overwhelming, but so, so exciting. ]

I'm so glad I found you here... this place was a little scary at first, but I don't feel afraid at all! I'll do everything I can to support you!
