lambda!
Lady Lambda? Do we not have anything to do today?
no subject
Which is why her response to Fauna's question is a giggle and a presumptuous little pat on the head. That's Lambda for you... ]
Not a thing! You're not trying to overwork yourself, are you?
no subject
[She's flustered by the headpat- this long and she's still awkward about signs of affection. But she seems restless still, tail twitching with impotent energy.]
Just... You know, if there's anything I can do for others...
no subject
[ She starts playing with Fauna's hair idly as she talks with a thoughtless easy familiarity. ]
You need to relax, relax! If you don't then one of these days you might just go pop!
no subject
[She isn't sure what to do, but she relaxes a bit.]
I don't think I would pop, though.
no subject
[ She mimes the spreading of a firework burst with her hands, wiggling her fingers the whole while. ]
All my plans would be up in smoke!
no subject
[or, you know, sets things on fire, or stabs them, but you know.]
no subject
[ despite her phrasing that as a question, it's becoming increasingly clear that this is Not optional. ]
no subject
[She sighs, and slumps down a little.]
Then, is there anything I can do for you today, Lady Lambda?
no subject
[ Lambda just. stares a hole right into her face. ]
I'm giving you a day off!
no subject
I mean, I get it, but....
... I, um. Don't know what to do with a day off...
no subject
Lambda puts a hand to her chin in thought. ]
You know, now you mention it... I'm not quite sure either. A day off is supposed to be for rest and relaxation, isn't it?
no subject
Yeah... To do things you find fun, I guess.
[... Fauna is going to be trying her best to not admit that she doesn't know what's fun.]
no subject
[ She waits for Fauna to elaborate.
. . .
Then she narrows her eyes. ]
You do have things you do for fun, don't you?
no subject
She withers under that gaze, shrinking down in embarrassment.]
I... Well... Um...
I'm happiest when I'm serving and being of use to you, so...
no subject
[ when did this become an interrogation??? ]
no subject
Well... I mean, that's... Not really...
no subject
[ She siiiiighs and shakes her head. ]
You really won't have any hope of connecting with people if you keep this up...
no subject
[She protests.]
I just, you know.... All of those things need money...
no subject
[ And to emphasize that, Lambda seizes Fauna's hands in her own with an expression you can only really call intense. ]
Why else do you think we do the things we do?
no subject
[IMMEDIATE.... even if her face is being smushed.]
no subject
[ STAAAAAAARE. ]
no subject
[Her ears droop.]
But I don't need to connect with anyone but you, Lady Lambda.
no subject
[ She gets a disapproving finger waggle! ]
I might be your most precious person [ SHE REALLY JUST CAME OUT AND SAID THAT, HUH ] but humans like you need to connect with each other to survive! It's how you find real happiness!
no subject
... unfortunately, that confidence and honesty is part of why Fauna likes her so much.]
I don't want that kind of happiness. There's no way I'd ever fit in or be wanted by humans, anyway.
That's why it's best if I just stay with you.
no subject
[ She reaches out and quite presumptuously cups Fauna's face in her hands. Her smile's just as warm as it ever is, but there's something a little cold under it. ]
There's nothing quite as sad as someone holding onto one-sided feelings, after all.
no subject
Fauna looks crushed for a moment, but quickly rallies, holding firm even with Lambda cupping her face...]
It's fine if that's all it is. I don't need anything more.
no subject
[ She giggles pleasantly, as if this is not an absolutely heart crushing thing to say. ]
So I'd like nothing more than to find someone who'll be able to love you as their very own most precious person. Wouldn't that be wonderful?
no subject
The conflict in her heart is complicated... so instead she chooses to ignore it and pretend she's fine.]
... I already know. A person who would love me like that doesn't exist. That's why I can devote myself to our cause so readily.
no subject
[ She finally releases Fauna's face and sets her hands on her heart. Her expression turns soft and wondrous, like she's been given a rare and special glimpse of something magical and whimsical.
It's the sort of smile she's never directed at Fauna. ]
Everyone loves someone. And everyone's so different...! So surely, in all those billions and millions of people– surely there should be a person who's capable of loving you!
no subject
[She looks away.]
But... Doesn't that mean there should be someone you love more than anyone else, out there, too?
no subject
Of course not! I told you, I love all humans. So that means I can't pick and choose and favour one or two above somebody else.
[ If she knows that this is a lie, she doesn't show it in any way. ]
Besides – it's humans who bond with each other through strife and hardship. You're not forgetting that I'm not human, are you?
no subject
[She twitches one of her ears for emphasis.]
I'm not sure I count as human anymore, either.
no subject
[ She reaches out and presses a hand to Fauna's sternum – a little too hard. ]
– is the same, don't you think? You still have a human heart that goes ba-bump, ba-bump. ♥ You can't get rid of that so easily!
no subject
[She looks down.]
I still... don't want to be with other humans.
no subject
But if humans are no good... hm, that changes things...
no subject
[Yes, she is. But she protests, but she can't look away....]
Changes things... how?
no subject
If you can't stand to be alone, that means you need somebody to be with. Right? And it has to be someone who'll treat you as if you're more precious than anybody else. That's the sort of thing you'd need to heal your heart.
But you're saying that humans are no good. So, we need to find someone who isn't human who'd be able to love you. That's a pretty big change!
no subject
And that person... No matter what, it can't be you?
no subject
[ Again, she reaches out to play with a little of Fauna's hair – whether affectionately or in a careless, thoughtless sort of way, it's hard to tell. ]
What you want is someone who'll love you more than anyone else, right? Who'll stop at nothing to make you and only you happy?
no subject
[And it's truthful, as she admits that.]
What I want is someone I can trust completely. Who I can believe in, no matter what, who won't betray me...
no subject
[ Her smile turns more thoughtful - it's not cruel exactly, but there's a calculating edge to it. Like a computer running dispassionately through an algorithm, combing through its datasets to come to the optimal end result. Sometimes, it's easy to forget that Lambda isn't as human as she pretends to be but at times like this, it becomes frighteningly apparent. ]
You know that I'll never betray you. And you know that I'll always make you happy. I'll love you, just as much as I'll love any other human I come across. But you'll never be my one and only and if I come across another human who needs my help as much as you do...
[ She lets the sentence trail off and the lock of Fauna's hair spills from her hand in turn. ]
Would that be enough to make you happy?
no subject
... Would it make her happy?
It couldn't. But could anything else? So she swallows that.]
Of course. Lady Lambda is my everything, after all.
no subject
[ Lambda promptly clasps Fauna's hand tight in both of hers and holds it to her heart, like she's cradling something precious. ]
If this is what will make you happy, then I'll love you. I'll never betray you. And I'll keep on loving all humans so you can believe in me until the end – even if it means I can't love you more than anyone else.
That's your happiness, right, Fauna?
This is a booty call for Miss Bellerose
[After a series of events involving a desperate innkeeper and her "haunted" cottage inn, a research university for mages on a hill, the discovery of a slew of accidental magic poisonings, and a heroic childhood romance coming to fruition after far too long, Rhee and Garnet have temporarily become the sole guests of an inn that isn't haunted at all, while its proprietress and her beau take a well-deserved mini-honeymoon. It's a nice break for all of them, since they get to stay for free as long as they like, as a reward for clearing the innkeeper's name, and there's more than enough food in the pantry to tide them over until the owner's return. They just have to cook and clean after themselves.
It's been warm, so Rhee went upstairs to hang up his coat. The dark shirt he wears underneath hugs the slim contours of his body in a way his coat definitively does not as he comes to join Garnet at the sink. Though it's never really been in question, it's newly clear: Rhee is, unequivocally, a strapping young man, lanky but well-kept.
And they have the whole cottage to themselves. :)]
Not much of a reward for you if I leave you to do all the work. Oh, there--pardon me.
[Utterly unaware of the space he takes, he reaches up and around her, leaning close so he can grab a dish towel hanging by her head. He sets to drying the dishes she's washed. The fine, fair hair at the nape of Rhee's neck clings slightly to his skin as he bends to the task, and he shakes away the bangs that fall uselessly into his face.
The broad stretch of his shoulders moves beneath the back of his shirt as he wipes a plate dry.]

... is what Garnet hopes he thinks, anyway. She resists the urge to avert her gaze and gives him a smile, though the awkwardness of it is impossible to miss. ]
I don't mind doing it. I'm still not used to it being so quiet, so I was trying to keep myself busy.
[ That much, at least, she's being honest about. She'd gotten so used to knowing that other people were bustling around that their absence has her feeling off kilter - and a little more overly aware of Rhee than she usually is.
But she can totally be normal about this. Totally. She'll handle it. ]
@pryftigern
It's late in the evening when she catches him by the sleeve – late enough that the sky outside is dark and the city below her apartment has lit up. With her lashes lowered, you could almost think the softness of her voice is something demure.
Almost. If you didn't know any better. ]
You still haven't recovered all the way, have you?
[ Excuses, excuses. It's been more than a week since they clashed with the Archer and ended him and while it had been a challenge... they'd won. And a week was more than enough time for a Servant like Oberon to have recovered.
But since this is just a transaction, there needs to be a reason for it. ]
Let me help.
