[ It's true enough for right now, anyway. ]

Your name is Kawasumi Mai-chan, right?

[Her eyes widen and she gasps, then nods a few times.]

Uh-huh. Are you psychic? Or a witch?

[ Yuuri can't help but laugh. ]

Not exactly. How do I...

[ She thinks on it. Mai might be a child now, but she's not stupid and Yuuri needs her trust. ]

I guess you could say that when you grow up, you and I are going to be friends.

...Really?

[She grips the headband tighter and looks up at Yuuri, shaking a little.]

And you're okay with that? Lots of people aren't.

Do you want me to tell you a secret, Mai-chan?

[ Yuuri puts a finger to her lips, with a conspiratorial smile. ]

One of the best things about being a grown-up is being able to decide you don't care what anybody else thinks of you.

But even if you don't, people won't want to be your friend if they don't like you, so... [She bites her lip and shrinks back.]

But that's just it. Once you find other people who think the same way you do, making friends is easy. It's how it worked for me and you, after all.

[She looks up, wide-eyed, at Yuuri and cautiously relaxes a little.]

That sounds really nice, onee-san. Are all the other kids your friends, too?

They will be, eventually. Things are... a little complicated right now.

[ She gives Mai a weary smile and then offers her a hand. ]

Should we go and find someplace to talk properly?

[She smiles a little and nervously takes Yuuri's hand.]

Okay. About what stuff?

[serrata]

Well, we're going to have to work out what to do about... all this.

[ She thinks she can say with some confidence Mai would not want to be stuck like this for an extended period of time. ]

You don't want to be stuck here, do you?

[pandorasbunny]

Um... [She thinks about this for a moment.] My friend went away. And I don't have any more. But my mom probably wants me to come home, so I should.

[serrata]

... I guess we'll have to figure out how to make that happen.

[ Hah. As if. ]

Do you think we can do that, Mai-chan?

I don't know... Maybe? Is there a phone booth here? Or I can try and take the train.
