Flowerquest 2K18

[photoshooter]

Oh, wow.

[Prompto's jaw drops, and then he laughs and hops down into the flower-carpeted valley, spinning slowly with his arms spread wide.]

This place. Is. Gorgeous. Hey, let's get a picture together before we get to work, okay?

[shiritai]

[ Violet just gives him a look. It's not much of a change from her usual kind of Looks, but there's a telltale narrowing of the eyes and a slight pinch of the lips there for anyone who knows what they're looking for. ]

We were told to collect flowers, not pictures.

[ And pictures of flowers certainly wouldn't count. ]

It'll just take a second! Come on, please? Just one!

[He's already taking out his camera and trotting back to her.]

It'll commemorate our first mission together! It's important to treasure these moments, you know.

[shiritai]

[ She just stares him down for a moment. Jiiiiiiii. ]

Why is it important?

[ It comes out sounding a little short, and her posture probably doesn't help -- squared shoulders, hands tucked neatly behind her back. She looks all business and no play, but the fact that she's willing to ask instead of insisting on getting on with their mission is... probably meaningful? It's always hard to tell with Violet. ]

[Prompto deflates a little, but he's used to Violet's mannerisms by now.]

Well, it's... you know, when you think back later on all the things you've done, sometimes it helps to have a picture. So you can really see how happy you were, or how proud, or... or however it was you were feeling.

[The fingers fiddling with his camera slow, and for a moment, his eyes are half-closed and sad. But Prompto shakes it off, literally, and grins bright again.]

A few months down the road, maybe you'll see what I mean. You just have to take my word for it today, okay, Vi?

[shiritai]

[ She continues staring him down for a long moment and it looks like she's going to just rebuff him again.

But then, perhaps a little surprisingly: ]

... Understood.

[ And she does think she understands now. It's a way of capturing something fleeting, transient in the only way you can. Prompto won't ever have this 'first time' of seeing the flowers again, but he can have memory and photographs and maybe that's almost as good.

She gives a little nod. ]

Should I stand with the flowers, so you can take a picture of both at the same time?

[photoshooter]

Yeah! Here, let's both be in it, though. Let's staaaaand... here!

[With his camera held high, lens facing him, he picks his spot and waves her eagerly over.]

Come on, come on! Daylight's wasting!

[It isn't. They just got here.]

[ There he goes... Violet might be the one who gets called a dog, but she thinks Prompto's better suited to the name. The way he bounds around makes her think of some sort of excitable puppy, always ready to bound off on some adventure or other.

There's no bounding from Violet but she makes her way over without complaint. You're not going to get anything instagram worthy out of her but it looks like she's going to play along at least. ]

Here?

[ She's stood in about the most lifeless pose imaginable with her hands hanging loosely by her side and she's in the exact wrong spot for the lighting. She's trying, though! ]

No, no, over here. So the light's not behind you. If it's like that we're not gonna be able to see your face.

[He shifts, too, helpfully demonstrating, then leans in close, curling the fingers of his free hand into an O.K. sign.]

Okay! Smile!

[Not that he's ever seen Violet smile, but it's worth a shot. Literally! Anyway, SNAP! Memory secured.]

[ She might not be good at photo ops, but she's good at following instructions, at least. So thankfully for all of us, she manages to move into some at least decent lighting before the camera clicks.

And she's not... smiling exactly but her expression's just a bit less severe. Her eyes are a little less glassy and the line of her mouth is just a touch softer than before. Not a smile by any means. But it's progress! ]

... are you going to be satisfied with that?

[ Meaning: can she stop posing now. ]

[He looks up from the camera screen to Violet, then nods and beams brightly.]

Yeah, this turned out great. See?

[He shifts to show her what she looks like when she's a degree less unsmiling.]

You're so photogenic. And with such a nice backdrop, too!

[He surveys the flowers again, delighted, before refocusing on the mission at hand.]

So, what kind of flowers are we supposed to get?

[shiritai]

[ She can't say she knows a whole lot about photography but she supposes it's a nice enough image. It's certainly bright and colourful enough and everything looks nice enough in the frame. But Violet doesn't exactly get what photogenic means but he makes it sound like a compliment so she'll take his word for it. ]

Forget-me-nots and hydrangeas, in the most uniform shades of blue we can find.

[ She has no idea why, but You Don't Question Orders so forget-me-nots and hydrangeas it is. ]

Blue, huh...

[Prompto looks wistful again, staring out at the flowers and the sky, then shakes his head.]

Forget-me-nots are the little blue ones with yellow centers, right? I know those. But I don't know what a hydrangea looks like. Do you?

[shiritai]

I've never seen one before.

[ Perhaps sending these two alone on Flowerquest 2k18 was something of a mistake. ]

But they must be a similar shade of blue to the forget-me-nots. Perhaps we should collect as many blue flowers as possible, to make sure we return with at least one or two hydrangeas.

Yeah, good idea. I'll text mission control for a picture of what we should be looking for in the meantime.

[Beep boop beep, that reminds me, I need to put his phone in his inventory, thanks, Claire.]

Blue flowers, though... you know something, Vi? Violets are blue, too.

[shiritai]

[ Well then, she'll go ahead and start picking some flowers. There's a little cluster of forget-me-nots close to their photo op spot so might as well busy herself with picking those. ]

You would recognize violets if you saw them, then? Should we collect some of those as well?

[ Because clearly that's the only reason Prompto would bring it up. I'm sorry, Quickboy ]

I... might? I think I would. They're kinda... bluish purple. And they're less, uh, chipper than forget-me-nots.

[He scratches the back of his head.]

I don't really know how to explain it. The difference, I mean. Something about the shape of the petals, maybe? Or the thing in the middle of the flower? It'd be easier if I could show you a picture, I'm no good with words.
