[ Wonderful. Just wonderful. A giant stone scorpion is exactly what she needs to be fighting right now. With a sword and all. Thank goodness for magic, honestly.

She hums under her breath -- a soft, drawn-out note that makes a dim spark light in her eyes. Just enough to make her a little more resilient, a little stronger and faster. She'll see what else they need once they actually start trying to take this thing to pieces. ]

How is it animated? Is there any way we can get it to drop its form?

[ Acting on reflex, Elodie casts out a half dozen threads to try and restrain the scorpion, but it snaps them almost effortlessly as it advances towards the closest threat - Alalia. They're threads, not chains, so of course she'd lose in a direct confrontation of power. ]

I've never seen a golem in person! I don't know what to look for!

[ Panic is an adventurer's worst enemy. ]

[ She spits the curse out under her breath and skitters away from Elodie to try and draw the scorpion's attention away from her. Elodie's far from defenseless but Alalia isn't about to let her test herself on something like this.

She has her sword draw and, still darting about to keep the golem's attention, calls out - ]

Something must be animating it! An energy, a binding spell of some kind -- there has to be something to dispel, especially in a golem this old!

[voiceboxed]

This shouldn't be possible! There's no way something this big and old could run on this little magic autonomously... unless...

[ Calm down, Elodie. You've never met a golem before, but you've studied as hard as anyone.

... ]

...It's not intelligent! It has to have some simple principle dictating how it acts, like pursuing heat, or movement! We should be able to trick it!

[ That's all Alalia gets out before that gargantuan tail comes down about an inch from where she's standing. Rock and debris spray out, skimming the exposed skin on her hands and face and she staggers back, choking on the kicked-up dust. ]

Keep-- keep stock still where you are unless it comes for you and we'll see what draws it!

[voiceboxed]

[ Elodie freezes, straining to not move so much as a single muscle. Will it work...

The scorpion doesn't seem to even notice she's there. ]
