[ She says that a little too quickly and perhaps a touch too defensively. It doesn't really answer his question, either. Ryoko lets that hang in the air for a second before she sighs and elaborates. ]

I overestimated my own abilities and underestimated the risk I was taking. I knew injury was a possible outcome, but it seemed like acceptable collateral damage and I was certain I'd walk away much less severely injured than this. In short, I was caught off guard and didn't think things through.

I do not over or underestimate data. I calculate my current performance and measure it against the performance of others. I simulate outcomes and act accordingly, to what I recognize as the most successful route to victory.

Maybe making comparisons like that is inevitable when you're surrounded by others with whom your differences are so stark and impossible to ignore. Maybe someone in Metal's position would have no choice but to become a little introspective, regardless of how they started out. ]

... I'm not the kind who thinks believing on its own is some kind of magic antidote. Even if I someday decided to believe I could do something physically impossible, that doesn't magically make it true. But I think... when you're so fixated on believing you can do something, that single-minded fixation makes you see opportunities someone else might dismiss.
