but they made a mistake somewhere with Yuri.
so much of Satomi's time is spent hiding in the library. it makes sense that they saw a lot of her, and they talked in passing from time to time, because Satomi is a monster but they're not heartless. it's not as easy to rebuff someone as it looks. that wasn't a problem, though. the problem was when they started spending time together. the problem was that Satomi started to think she was cute, and that maybe if they were normal, things could have been different. the real problem was that when Yuri confessed her feelings, Satomi didn't turn her down.
so they're... dating? well, in theory. they haven't actually been on a date yet; Satomi is waiting at the front gates of the school because today is supposed to be their first one.
they're keeping their headphones on while they wait for Yuri to be let out, though not for the whispers of other students who pass by as they head home for the day, alarmed by the delinquent loitering out front with their pierced ears and rumpled uniform. it's because if they don't focus on something else, they're going to panic. most of the fear is of their own nature, lancing through them all over again like a new wound every time their stomach twists. but there's an absurd, out of place little seed of anxiety in the back of their mind that sprouts stupid teenage thoughts: what do I say to her? what am I supposed to do? I've never been on a date before. what if she hates it?
for fuck's sake. they shouldn't be worried about anything except not eating her. ]

Of course, it's really only thanks to the Literature Club that she doesn't just fly into a panic and cancel the whole thing. She's certain Satomi would be happier going on a date with anyone else in school and the idea that this is either a prank or just them taking pity on her is wedged too deep into her head to be completely rid of. But between Sayori and Natsuki's obstinate refusal to let her be down on herself and Monika's infuriatingly well-reasoned points that Satomi really isn't the sort of person who'd agree to a pity date, or a practical joke at her expense, the idea does eventually loosen its stranglehold on her. Even then, it takes Natsuki more or less physically dragging her to the entryway and pointing out that Satomi is right there and waiting to Yuri to actually start to believe that this might turn out alright.
Despite all that, the stares of the other students and the ripple of not-so-subtle whispers has Yuri looking as stiff as uncomfortable as she's ever been as she hurries over to where Satomi's waiting for her. She's doing her best to smile, but... uh, it sure is obvious she's Doing Her Best, let's say. ]
S–Satomi! [ Nerves make her voice crack and she just barely manages to not cringe. ] Sorry, I um... d–did I keep you waiting?
[ Of course she did. They're right here, waiting for her. Hopefully they won't notice if she just never talks or makes any noise again, ever. ]
