CMO FOR ANIKA QUINN/REGALIA EUPHEME
... just as soon as she actually figures out how this whole princess thing works, of course.
Cliffnotes & permissions for meme/cmo/whatever purposes below:
- A sixteen year old cis girl, who's pretty average? Really? She's got a pretty face with long, light brown hair that reaches the small of her back. She's about 5'4'' and average build. Really, there's nothing wildly interesting about her regular appearance! As Regalia Eupheme, her hair turns powder blue and she's decked out in a frilly, fluffy magical girl outfit, in blue and white with gold accents (google 'hime lolita' for a general idea of the visual until i get my commission back LOL).
- From a "Japanafornia"-esque setting, so think something along the lines of the Western Ace Attorney localizations and you're golden.
- To the casual observer, she's human, but to those with fine tuned spiritual or magical senses, they'll be able to pick up that she's ???a container??? for a huge wellspring of magical energy, that happens to be shaped like a teenage girl. Also she's uh, a magical girl, if that's a thing that can be sensed?
- Constantly on the verge of falling into a giant pit of anxiety and impostor syndrome!! She's been plagued with the sense that something about her is "wrong" or "missing" since she was very young and does her best to cope with this by being cheerful, chirpy, friendly and always in good spirits. This is actually a little forced on her part, as can become obvious when she's not able to keep it up. Very much a people pleaser, and a bit of a doormat.
- Depending on her 'canon' point for any given thread, she may or may not be capable of transforming into Regalia Eupheme. When she is capable of doing so, she does so with the phrase "Eupheme Regalia Engage!", at which point she transforms pretty much instantly with a flash of light. I'M STILL WORKING OUT WHAT HER FINISHER IS SO GET BACK TO ME ON THAT. Since she's still working on this whole magical girl thing, her powerset mostly revolves around copying/piggybacking off the powers of other magical girls. She's hoping to develop her own powers eventually!!!
- Skilled at/knowledgable about everything the average person can reasonably be expected to be
- Genuinely cruel, actively malicious or mean-spirited to the average person
- Particularly skilled/experienced as a magical girl

OVA: Another World - Regal Dreamers
To anyone else, it'd be small, completely inconsequential as any other gossip. But as it stood, Ayla Rosales had to bite back a squeak as she heard the murmurings of conversation several seats down. As the group giggled over video (of course there was video, why wouldn't there be video of something so embarrassing?), she tried not to sink into her seat. She - she'd just lost her footing! Jumping from rooftop to rooftop wasn't as easy as it looked in the shows! She'd hit her face and everything...
As the light rail made its way to downtown Little Kyoto, Ayla was already making a list for herself. The Village Plaza was her first hit - the Blazer Sun merchandise she'd ordered finally had come in! And there was that ramen place she liked and...
...well, maybe there wouldn't be any monster attacks today?
Try as she might, after awakening as Dreamchaser Luna, she'd only run across that mysterious swordswoman once, only told she was on the hunt for a princess. And balancing school and magical life was a lot harder than it looked in the shows, not to mention finding a princess in the meantime! It'd only been a couple weeks and she'd been sighted, sure, but thankfully no news people had flagged her down, just a trending local hashtag and some blurry videos on occasion. At least her magic hid her identity - she'd never hear the end of it from her brother if he ever found out she was the local magical heroine protecting the city.
...still, it was lonely. It would be nice, if someone else could be with her. That was how it worked, right? You get a new teammate, you make a new friend...
The light rail chimed as her stop was announced. But even after getting off and meeting the bright, clear-skied day, Ayla was distracted. ]
Maybe...
[ She couldn't finish the thought, instead shaking her head and pouting.
Ugh, okay, new plan. Cookies. Cookies were always a good distraction. Let's see, she could make chocolate toffee cookies for Aaron, snickerdoodles for Adam, macarons for Alina...
Hey Anika, might wanna watch out, there's a pigtailed girl headed for you - ]

Which is probably to be expected. A real life, honest to god magical girl suddenly showing up isn't exactly what you'd call an everyday occurrence and it's all everyone's been talking about. It's made things feel kind of weird and off-kilter and while everyone else seems to be riled up and excited about it, the whole thing just makes Anika feel weirdly anxious. Even when she's trying not to think about it, there's a weird niggly feeling in the back of her head that won't let her completely put it out of her head.
So the next best thing is for Anika to get out of her own head, at least a little.
Little Kyoto isn't one of her usual hangout spots which is why it's perfect for a bit of metaphorical fresh air. Maybe she'll find somewhere new that she likes and she hasn't shopped before and that can distract her for a bit.
But probably not.
And like any
good protagonistdistracted schoolgirl, she's off in her thoughts just enough that she doesn't realize she and Ayla are in a collision course with each other until the very last moment. ]Ah–! [ She just barely manages to avoid straight up bodying the poor girl, and dances back a step or so. ] I'm so sorry...! Wow, my head was really in the clouds...
1/2
- and it's like time slows, as magic meets magic and things just click into place. It's not something Ayla consciously understands, necessarily, but it's like...meeting a kindred spirit. An old friend. Someone just like her, somehow.
The time slowing, washed out background effect is completely ruined, mind you, by the fact that Ayla's momentum doesn't stop, so while Anika avoids a collision, Ayla isn't so lucky. She yelps, trying to stop herself before she falls - and instinctively reaches for the first thing she can grab.
Which just happens to be Anika's arm. She doesn't drag Anika down with her, but does end up tangled with her for a moment... ]
2/2
Aaaaa I'm so sorry!
[ Ayla flushes as she detaches herself from this other girl, pigtails bobbing as she scrambles a few steps away.
Oh hey! Now that you can see her better, Anika, you'd recognize Ayla as your
senpaiupperclassmen at school! Her twin brother's the more popular one but Ayla Rosales is still pretty well received in her own right. She's known for making people cookies! There's also the talk that she met that new magical girl in person, but that wasn't pretty interesting, sounded like she ran away and hid while that new heroine took care of everything. ]

She knows this girl. In some weird, gut reaction way. A way that makes that itchy feeling of anxiety at the back of her head finally perk up in recognition and say that's it. that's what I've been looking for this whole time.
Anika opens her mouth to say hey, have we met? but even if we haven't, how come I– ]
2/2
Wait. Hold on. What the hell was that? She blinks, shakes her head, to rattle away... whatever had just come over her but finds that she isn't able to make her head quite as clear as she'd like it. That weird overly familiar feeling remains and she's not sure how to feel about that.
This is... some girl from school, though, right? Yeah, Anika knows her. Or at least she knows of her in passing and Anika's going to jump on that as an excuse for this weird sense of kinship because any normal-sounding explanation is a godsend right now. ]
Uh– it's fine, seriously! [ She puts her hands up in what she hopes is a placating gesture. ] That's what I get for not really looking where I'm going... you're okay, right?
belatedly i realize this meetup furthers the dreamchasers canon that only a-name people get powers
I'm okay! Injured pride more than anything, ahaha!
[ Who is this girl? She's too young to be in the same grade and there's nothing super remarkable about her. It takes her a moment, then: ]
Oh! Anika, right?
[ ...weird, why does she like, know this girl's name? Moving on: ]
I think we've met in a club?
[ yeah, club. That has to be it. ]
I'm Ayla!
[ She mostly frequents the home economics club but she's flitted among a bunch of them. Are you in the anime club? It's okay, she won't judge. ]
no subject
[ If they have met in a club, that's news to Anika, who hasn't been in a club for a good few months. But when she wracks her brain to try and come up with some explanation for this weird uncanny feeling she realizes she might have an out for this. ]
Ah, now you mention it, I guess that's probably it! I kind of jumped around a couple clubs at the start of the year to try and figure out what I wanted to do but now I guess I'm in the "go home by myself after school" club, haha!
[ Great. Fantastic. The perfect line to make her sound exactly like a friendless weirdo. Good job, Anika, you nailed it. ]
Y–you do home ec or something, right? I hear people talking about your cookies all the time.
no subject
Nothing wrong with that! My brother's like that too, ehehehe.
[ Go home club is valid! ]
Oh! Yeah! I help out with the student council sometimes too.
[ Usually when she's running late and needs an excuse to not get detention, but having those connections is important! Or...something like that. ]
You must be new around here right? D'you need someone to show you around?
[ Wait, that's a little weird right? But also - ]
N-not that you look like you need it! But, um, I heard there was, um, a monster attack recently?
[ God that still sounds weird to say???? ]
Safety in numbers, right...?
no subject
You know, I think I'd really like that. I don't usually come here, so I don't really know where to start.
[ And, even though she'd come here by herself intentionally, she's realizing that it'd be nice to have at least a little company. ]

Tucked away on the far side of the Plaza, in one of the lower buildings, is Anime Forest, where Ayla rambles about her favorite show, Beautiful Protector Blazer Sun, as she picks up something she'd preordered, a fairly ornate statue depicting Blazer Sun and Lunar Mariner, back to back and hands clasped.
It's when they've reached a rotating sushi bar that it finally clicks that she's completely been talking Anika's ear off, about Blazer Sun and all kinds of other stories she has.]
Oh gosh, I've just been talking so much, haven't I? I-I'll shut up now!
no subject
She wonders if all those people who tack her on as an afterthought know what they're missing out on. ]
No, no, you don't have to shut up. [ She can't keep herself from laughing, just a little though. After all that breezy talking, it's a little funny to see her get in a fluster. ] To be honest... I kind of came out today to get out of my head a little, so it's been nice. Things have been sort of weird lately, you know? So getting to talk about basically everything else is a nice change.
no subject
Oh, I can understand that!
[ Wait. Maybe that's a little too cheerful? ]
I mean...sometimes you just need a change of pace, right? Before your brain runs you in like, circles and stuff? [finger twirls to demonstrate!] You just keep hitting the same walls and stuff, and it just feels worse and worse?
[ Oh hm. Getting maybe too close to Admitting Some Things. Deflect, deflect! ]
A-at least that's how I understand it!
[ Just gonna drink her soda for a second!! ]
Oh! Did you wanna split a dessert?
[ Sweets will solve this! ]
no subject
But it's a lot easier with Ayla. Despite the fact – or even because – they don't know each other all that well yet.
But, well. Even without knowing Ayla all that well, Anika sure knows a hasty subject change when she sees it so she'll hop on board. ]
Hmm, you know what? I think I do. What's your recommendation? I don't like stuff that's too sweet, but anything kind of mellow like cakes and cookies are good with me.
no subject
I think you'd like the shortcake! Sponge cake isn't super sweet and they used whipped cream instead of a buttercream for the frosting, so the only real sweetness is from the strawberries!
[ oops, almost went into a cooking ramble. She's gonna dial it back!!! ]
The macarons here are good too, they have a bunch of flavors but...
[ She's gonna just. Sheepishly laugh? ]
I've always kinda thought macarons were too pretty to eat, you know?
[ It's nice to ramble about more inane topics and socialize like a normal high schooler - it's amazing how she never really thought much of it before. Still, drifting off has its downsides too - namely the beginnings of a darkening sky outside, when it'd previously been cloudless and bright blue. Something nefarious is beginning to form outside... ]
1/2
[ She giggles to herself at the thought. ]
But if you recommend the shortcake, I'll go for that. It sounds really good!
[ And if anyone knows what they're talking about when it comes to cakes, then it's probably Ayla.
But then... ]
no subject
Something's... wrong? She thinks? But what?
Her eyes slip away from Ayla and dart around, in search of just what could have made her mood turn so suddenly and the only thing she can spot is the clouds, suddenly bloated and dark where there'd been spotless blue before. It still doesn't feel right, but she grabs onto it as an excuse anyway. ]
Oh, wow, uh– [ She gestures to the window with a tip of her head. ] The weather turned kind of out of nowhere, huh...
no subject
But this? This feels...sorrowful. Desperate. Someone searching for something, someone? She doesn't know -
The feeling intensifies as a wave of sorrow pulses and ripples through the area. People around them go listless, before collapsing outright and Ayla feels that energy trying to take something important and intrinsic from her. A treasure, even if Ayla wouldn't be able to name it.
But magic fights magic and she grits her teeth, holding it out. And then she whirls around, taking stock of the situation. ]
Anika!
[ She's rushing to Anika's side, trying to fight back the panic she's feeling.
She has to stay calm, people need her!
But... ]
A-Anika...?
no subject
She opens her mouth to ask just what's going on – and then the first wave hits her before she can get any of the words out, and the force it of it makes Anika almost double up. It's like feeling somebody shove their hands into her brain. She can almost feel fingers scrabbling around in her head and her heart, trying to find something precious to take it from her – her treasure.
The instant that realization hits her, something inside her responds. She doesn't have a word for it, but something lashes out, striking against that force and shoving it back and out of her head. The horrible sense of someone pounding against her skull finally abates and Anika lets out a long, hard breath.
When she looks up at Ayla, she's squinting through the newly formed headache thrumming in her skull, but otherwise her eyes are clear and bright – unaffected. ]
Ayla...? [ She pulls in a shaky breath and puts a hand to her head. ] Wh–what... what the heck what that?
1/2
Her hands are shaking. Not because of this scenario, she's fought plenty of times by now, but the fact that she has no idea what this thing is. ]
I-I...
[ The doors to the restaurant fly open as the strange energy makes its way in, hurtling into one of the decorative plants as it does so - and something about that connection with the inorganic makes the energy latch on. It twists into a tree-like monstrosity, various innocuous items caught in its branches - pictures and jewelry, other mundane things.
Treasures.
But it's not enough for this thing. It wants something...more.
Ayla takes a breath and knows what she has to do. She moves to stand, looking down at Anika with an apologetic smile. ]
...sorry. I think this is my fault, ahaha.
[ Her voice isn't shaking, at least. She reaches into her pocket for her Dream Key, before raising it above her head. ]
2/2
[ And then there's a burst of magic and light.
Even if she's scared, even if she's alone, even if she has no idea what the hell this thing is, it's her duty to protect others. It's that determination that carries her transformation, that stirs her heart and her courage ever forward.
You know, it's funny that no one's noticed she's the mysterious new magical girl in town, honestly. Her hair flips the same way, even if the color's different.
When the light fades, someone new is in Ayla's place, blue haired and silver eyed. ]
A gentle dream guided by glimmering moonlight, Dreamchaser Luna!
[ And then she's off, charging at this thing to get a solid hit in. ]
no subject
In any other situation she'd be laughing. But right now, all she can do is watch with her hands clamped tight over her mouth, trying desperately to convince herself to believe this is all happening.
The tree... monster... thing takes a solid hit from Ayla (or the girl Ayla has turned into, rather) and seems to reel back. Anika's breath catches in her throat and she thinks that surely, Luna's going to have this in hand but then... something changes.
The monster rights itself but it doesn't move to attack, not right away anyway. It simply stares Luna down with what passes for eyes in the front of its trunk and then its gaze lights up with a malicious glow that makes Anika feel itchy and anxious all over. It's hypnotic. She can't look away. And– it's almost like she can feel, more than hear, a voice in the back of her head.
What it is you treasure? What is it you're looking for? What's the thing you want most in the world? ]
no subject
But something is wrong. Luna can feel it the moment she makes impact. The tree looks solid, moves like it's solid, but it's like punching hair or webs, just a bunch of threads making up a bigger whole. She stumbles back in surprise more than fear and it clings to her, to her arms and legs, winding up her wrists and ankles.
She looks around for some kind of solution, going pale when it hits her - this thing doesn't want the others, it wants her, purely because she's powerful.
And then its eyes start glowing.
Tell me, little dreamer, what you dream of....
Luna bristles like a cat, but it's gotten into her and she looks around with wide eyes, seeing flashes of a place that isn't here. It mingles with the present, feeling like a broken mirror or a glitched videogame and -
"Ayla?"
Her heart twists in what feels like grief. It's enough to make her let her guard down, if just for a moment, as this monster starts reeling her in.
You'll do for now.
And then, amidst reality fragmenting, she can see Anika there, just as entranced.
No.
No, she...she has to...
Luna grits her teeth, digs her heels in so hard they carve into the floor beneath her, but it's not enough. It's stronger, has a clearer mind than her. So she acts on instinct - in a flash of light, a bow shaped like a massive crescent moon appears, before it breaks apart in a single motion, two fearsome blades. ]
That's enough!
[ And she swings, piercing both eyes at once. The hypnotic light sputters, then vanishes.
It's too late for her. But at least...Anika could....]
RUN!
[ It's the last thing she manages before the monster drags her in.
And then Anika is alone. ]
no subject
Anika manages one shaky step forward. And then another. And she's just about to lift her hand, fingers uncurling to offer this... whatever it is that's suddenly alive in the back of her head when Ayla's voice suddenly breaks through. The eerie light dies just as that thundering presence in her head does and she reels. It's a struggle to reorient herself but she manages to get her head back on straight just in time to see Ayla vanish into the monster's depths.
Right into the belly of the beast.
The restaurant is so, so quiet. All Anika can hear is the sound of her heart thundering in her chest. The monster makes no advance on her yet, still reeling itself from Ayla's attack – or maybe, because it knows she has nowhere to go. If she tries to run, won't it catch her?
But... she can't run. Or rather, she won't.
Anika doesn't know where this sudden burning sense of anger is coming from. The fear is still there, but it's muffled and far away, blanketed by a dead certainty that she can't just run away and leave Ayla behind. She can't stand by and do nothing about this.
She's shaking as she pulls herself up to her full height but her voice is steady and clear when it rings out. To Anika's ears, it almost sounds like a different girl entirely. ]
Give her back.
[ She has to do something about this. ]
Do you hear me?! I just told you–
[ Because she
(Eupheme)
is someone
(Regalia)
who can do something about this.
(Engage) ]
– to give her back!
[ Light floods the room. Pale gold and blue and warm and it's all Anika can see. It feels like the world's frozen in place just for a second, just a heartbeat, but that's all the time she needs to understand what this is. This is... her treasure. This is her magic. And she has to use it now or she'll never get a chance to save Ayla.
She barely even notices when her hair turns silky blue, or the clothes she'd been wearing are weaved into something frilled and sparkling. All she cares about is getting to the monster that swallowed Ayla up. It rears back and lashes out but Anika somehow manages to dodge around it and dive forward, straight for the heart of the monster. She's not aiming to hit. She's aiming to reach.
Her hand thrusts through the tangle of webs, all the way up to her shoulder and it's a struggle not to be swallowed up herself. Phantom images play across her eyes but Anika ignores them. She's only thinking of one thing right now and that's getting (her friend? her ally?) Ayla out safely. ]
Ayla! Your hand! Give me your hand!
1/2, cw parental death
It's nothing serious. Just a case of pneumonia. Liliana Rosales bundles up in blankets and rests. Nana Lupe dotes over her daughter's condition, making sure to keep tabs on her. Ayla and her nana work in the kitchen, making Liliana's favorite foods that are easy on her sick stomach.
Liliana laughs when Ayla brings soup over. Places a hand to her head, gently tucks a lock of hair behind her ear. "Mija," she says simply, voice full of love. "No te preocupes! I'll be better before you know it."
And she smiles, bright as always, and lets her daughter hold her hand.
Her hand is warm.
…
A month later, Ayla Rosales sits numbly at the wake. She has cried so much, so many times. Her twin brother sits beside her, clasping her hand tight, shoulders shaking.
Nana says they don't have to view her.
They both want to.
She's just tall enough to see into the casket. Her mother wears a lovely dress, one of her favorites. She looks like she's sleeping. She looks like any minute now, she'll wake up and say "boo!" and scoop her up in a hug and laugh as Ayla squeals in delight.
But she doesn't.
Ayla reaches over to hold her mother's hand.
Her hand is cold.
…
In the present, Dreamchaser Luna whimpers. The countless threads have ensnared her, like a spider trapping its prey, and something’s dragging her farther in to the heart of this monster. Countless whispers sound out around her, like a haunting windchime, people whispering their own desires, the things they treasure most, what they want most in the whole wide world.
Luna fades in and out of consciousness. The monster whispers again, needling at her wishes, at her treasures.
Tell me the deepest desire in your heart, little dreamer. Even you have one, don’t you?
There is, and she knows it all too well. ]
